Your College spending budget

How to make yourself a spending budget

Various students in college may have no idea what to do with their money. Numerous kids will go without having control with money until they get to college. These eighteen to twenty two year olds take all the cash they now have and just spend it without thinking about where their money is going. Students will take out loans all the time without realizing they have to pay it back. Helping your child set up a spending budget is what you are able to do as a parent.

Where to start

You’ll have to start with basic costs. These thing include tuition, food, books and rent. It is very important to prorate with students. Add together tuition and divide it by twelve since it is only paid a few times a year. Anything that is paid less than monthly should be prorated like this. These kids should be able to recognize how much money they’re making every month versus their spending. Decide what you need to put within the budget, but make sure you get personal, auto, bills, and phone expenses. You will be able to change this in time because it will be imperfect.

Interest should be prorated

You have to prorate any grants or loans received. Every month they’ll be able to see what they are spending and what they’re earning. Once being able to see this, it is easier to make decisions about how to divvy out the rest in the money. Sometimes parents will control the account by putting in only a small amount each week. They’ll be able to better discipline themselves with the spending budget.

Teaching discipline

There are plenty of ways parents can help their children discipline themselves with a spending budget. As I already mentioned, one might want to control the amount of money they receive. There is a couple I knew who would only put a certain sum of cash on their son’s card each month. At first they hated having to tell him no when he called for cash but they liked his responsibility he learned. Your kids will figure out what is most important to them.

It is also good to encourage your sons or daughters to get jobs. I knew a couple who would pay for nothing but their son’s tuition and books. Their son learned how to look after himself which helped his future. It might be hard to do this but it can be worth it whenever you see the end result.
