A New Korean War would be bad business

The right sees Obama’s falling numbers and Israeli strain as indications that war with Iran is imminent. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made a point on “Meet the Press” lately that the United States is more than ready to take up arms against Iran. However, such speculation may be premature. According to Front Page Magazine, war against North Korea is more likely. Businesswise, a New Korean war would hurt both South Korea and the United States, when North Korea would no doubt be devastated in Stone Age proportions.

Nobody wants a New Korean War

Numerous territory clashes between North Korea and South Korea – which culminated in the sinking of the South Korean ocean vessel Cheonan – have pulled the United States of America to the potential New Korean War conflict, says Front Page and various other news sources. Kim Jong-il, North Korea’s leader, has boasted of his nation’s readiness to fight, which has given world stock markets reason to hiccup. That task of unification, as outlined by the Associated Press, could contain “powerful nuclear deterrence”.

As well as outright war, North Korea has also said that sanctions levied over the Cheonan incident may also prompt a violent response.

The United States of America will stand by its ally nation of South Korea

UPI reports that a recent Angus Reid Public Opinion survey showed that more than half of Americas adults expect a war between North Korean and South Korea soon. Less than half of those surveyed are against America’s involvement in such a war. The Americas government has backed South Korea, vowing to defend it in any armed conflict with North Korea, so involvement seems definite, should hostilities escalate.

Boasts of war, busts of business

The Detroit Bureau reports the prospect of a New Korean War is unsettling to business interests. From an import standpoint, war could possibly be disastrous. Hyundai, Daewoo, LG, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and a host of other big-box retailers would be severely impacted. South Korea would experience economic hard times as their import routes are constricted by war, and even China would feel the pinch as they deal with refugees flooding their borders with the Koreas. Dominoes would continue to fall, and the United States would not stay away from the collision entirely.

America would cry for its South Korean supply

As South Korean manufacturers have admitted that they do not have a New Korean War contingency plan, lanes of shipping would likely dry up. The North Korean army may not scare South Korea or the United States, but the destructive potential is still there for lives and wasted dollars. If commerce lanes are blocked, South Korea and America will suffer, despite the fact that North Korea will no doubt suffer ultimate defeat.
